Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell

Outliers by Malcolm GladwellOutliers: The Story of Success is probably one of my favourite books. Although it is not really a business book as such, after some thought I included it in the Business category because the arguments will definitely have an effect when you apply them to your business life.

That is true for a lot of books in the self-help genre, of course, but Malcolm Gladwell‘s writings tend to the more philosophical. The beauty of his principle here is that in drawing on examples of some very successful people in the world of business, music, sports and science, he examines the circumstances that have contributed to them being where they are now. Would Bill Gates, for example, be as successful if he had been born in a different country a few years earlier or later? Who knows …

You may have heard of the 10,000 hours theory – that it takes 10,000 hours or thereabouts to master a skill. He cites professional musicians and sportspeople, and it certainly encourages you to think about fully applying yourself to what you do, rather than hopping from one thing to another with the end result of becoming a master of nothing.

Outliers is challenging. Not everyone agrees with Gladwell‘s argument, but it will make you think and perhaps consider things differently.
