The E-Myth Revisited, Michael Gerber

The E-Myth RevisitedProperty Hub Book Club featured title, November 2014

If I had to choose a favourite business book, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It would probably be right up there at the top of the list. The sense and sheer simplicity of the message so inspired me when I first read it that it has been a contributing factor not just to the way I have worked ever since, but also to what I have chosen to do.

The author explains the principles by means of an advisor working with a fictional business. Currently a lifestyle baker’s business with a worn-out owner who is also the baker, he takes her through the steps that she needs to carry out in order to free herself from the day-to-day drudgery that has replaced her initial entrepreneurial zeal.

Easy to read, the steps are also easy to follow. If you are a one-man band who wants to build your enterprise into a bigger business, there will be some effort to get systems in place at the outset, but it will be well worth it in the long run.

When I got involved with a new venture a few years ago, I adopted the principles in this book and systemised everything that I got my mitts on, right from day one. It made an enormous difference when getting staff in, because the handbook was pretty much already written. After deciding to move on, it was all there in black and white for the person who took over.

The book is all about working on a business rather than in it (although of course there’s a lot of “in”, in the early days) and is a favourite for several business people and investors.
